PROFIBUS is the acronym for Process Field Bus. It is a field bus created and tested by a consortium made by a number of companies including Siemens. Its field of application is process and industrial automation. The Bus interconnects various peripherals with a Master – Slave type system based on RS-485 communication.
The kinds of industrial automation cables for PROFIBUS and their variations:
- PROFIBUS DP (Decentralised Peripherals) is used to operate sensors and actuators via a centralised controller in the production technique. Variable data speeds of up to 12 Mbit/sec are possible.
- PROFIBUS PA (Process Automation) is used to control measuring appliances via a process control system that uses a transmission system that is different from DP. This PROFIBUS variant is also suitable for areas at risk of explosion. The data transmission speed is 31.25 kbit/s.
As with other BUS systems, transmission can occur through a variety of channels, such as a wireless network, optic fibre or copper cables.
The most commonly used standardised copper cables are:
- 1 Pair in AWG 22 with 150 OHM impedance (PROFIBUS DP)
- 1 Pair in AWG 18 with 100 OHM impedance (PROFIBUS PA)
However, cables with different sections can be made complying with binding transmission characteristics. The DP PROFIBUS interconnections are made mainly with these connectors: Sub-D and M12.
